Johanneskirche (Bern)
The Johanneskirche is a church building of the Reformed Church at Breitenrainstrasse 26 in Bern .
history
At the end of the 19th century, the city of Bern experienced a larger population increase. The church buildings that had existed until then - the minster , the Nydegg and the Heiliggeistkirche as well as the French church - were no longer sufficient for the faithful , so that in 1872 a church building association was founded, aiming to purchase a plot of land on Lorrainestrasse and donations for the construction another church. Because of its location, the new place of worship was initially to be called Lorraine Church . When enough money was available, the Karlsruhe architects Karl Moser and Robert Curjel received the order for a specific design of a church . The church building association finally acquired another piece of land on the corner of Breitenrainstrasse and Wylerstrasse as a building site. The first construction plans now had to be revised again. The Bern architect Rudolf Ischer took over the construction management . When it was inaugurated in 1893, the church building was the first church in Bern outside the old town.
The aforementioned builders Moser and Curjel also created the Bernese Pauluskirche, built in 1902/1903 .
In later years a semicircular choir with large colored windows was added. The font is in this room.
From 1918 to 1935 Karl von Greyerz worked as a pastor at the Johanneskirche.
From 1962 to 2002 Hans Eugen Frischknecht was the organist and choirmaster here.
The church building also has a parish hall, which is decorated in the small hall with two glass pictures by Walter Loosli .
description
The church in neo-Gothic style consists of a single nave long house with polygonal transverse arms with a floor area of 170 m² and 45 m² each. It offers space for 216 (main ship) and 50 people each (transept). At first she did not have a choir room . The building is completed with a steep gable roof covered with tiles. Except for the bell tower inserted in the south-western corner on the outside, it was a symmetrically designed building. Because the church was built on a hill, the tower is a special architectural highlight. The gable made of hewn rubble stones and the portal with a rose window arranged above it are striking . A few steps lead up to the portal.
The three choir windows were built between 1958 and 1961 according to designs by the Zurich glass artist Max Hunziker , they show stories and images from the New Testament such as Jesus' Last Supper and from the Hebrew Bible . The designs comprised 51 paintings and drawings that were exhibited in the Johannes Kirchgemeindehaus on the occasion of Hunziker's 100th birthday in autumn 2001.
A three-part gallery accommodates the organ and contains 20 seats, while the side galleries can accommodate 30 church visitors each. Today's organ was built in 1954 by Orgelbau Goll, Lucerne, with 40 stops on three manuals and a pedal.
