John Basil Meeking (born November 19, 1929 in Ashburton , † June 11, 2020 in Christchurch ) was a New Zealand clergyman and Roman Catholic bishop of Christchurch .

Life

After his theological training, John Meeking was ordained a priest by Bishop Edward Michael Joyce for the Diocese of Christchurch on July 19, 1953 . From 1963 to 1966 he completed a doctorate at the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas . In 1969 Pope Paul VI called him . to the Secretariat for Promoting Christian Unity of the Roman Curia, of which he was undersecretary from 1985 to 1987.

Pope John Paul II appointed him Bishop of Christchurch on March 30, 1987. The Archbishop of Wellington , Thomas Stafford Cardinal Williams , donated him episcopal ordination on June 3 of the same year ; Co -consecrators were Archbishop Antonio Magnoni , Apostolic Pro-Nuncio in New Zealand and Fiji , and Brian Patrick Ashby , Bishop Emeritus of Christchurch.

Pope John Paul II accepted his early resignation on December 15, 1995. From 1997 to 2006 he worked for Francis Cardinal George in the US Archdiocese of Chicago . He was also chaplain of the Sisters of St. Mary of Oregon (SSMO).

John Basil Meeking had lived in Christchurch since 2006 and died in Christchurch Hospital at the age of 90.
