John Corbett (born July 18, 1963 in Chicago , Illinois ) is an American jazz journalist, musician of improvising music and record producer from Chicago.

Live and act

Corbett studied at Brown University , where he began writing about improvising music and in 1984 founded his own concert agency. He received his PhD from Northwestern University . He lives in Chicago and is a permanent journalist at Down Beat , for whom he has been writing since 1990 and where he has his own column about out of print records ( Vinyl Freak ). He also writes for the Chicago Reader and the Chicago Sun Times and writes liner notes . He also performs as a musician himself (first trumpet and flugelhorn , then mostly guitar, which he taught himself after playing with Derek Bailey , and electronic equipment) and has released several records.

Corbett has been producing since 1995 and has been publishing his own reissue record series with Atavistic Records since 2000 with his favorite music, free improvisation music and free jazz (Unheard Music Series). Many European jazz musicians appeared there (such as Peter Brötzmann , Manfred Schoof , Han Bennink , Alexander von Schlippenbach , Kees Hazevoet , Günter Christmann , Torsten Müller , but also US-Americans such as Joe McPhee , Sun Ra , Fred Anderson , Hal Russell ) . The idea for this came to him while visiting German radio archives on a trip with the support of the Goethe Institute , after hearing that they wanted to reduce their archive material. He also publishes reissues from the Free Music Production catalog .

Since 1996 he has hosted the Wednesday Night Jazz series of events at the Empty Bottle music club in Chicago with saxophonist and clarinetist (and McArthur Prize winner) Ken Vandermark and organizes his own jazz festival (Empty Bottle Jazz Festival).

Since 1988 he has also been teaching as an adjunct professor at the School of the Art Institute (SAIC) in Chicago. With Jim Dempsey, he has his own art gallery Corbett vs. Dempsey in Chicago. For many years he had his own jazz radio series Radio Dada on WHPK (a station from the University of Chicago) and in the 2000s he had a writer's block jazz series with jazz journalists Kevin Whitehead and Lloyd Sachs on the Chicago radio station WNUR .

In 2002 he was artistic director of the Berlin Jazz Festival .

In 2016, Chicago University Press published his book A Listener's Guide to Free Improvisation .
