John D. Dunning

John Daniel Dunning (born May 5, 1916 in Los Angeles , † February 25, 1991 in Santa Monica , California ) was an American film editor .

Life

John D. Dunning was from 1947 under contract with MGM as editor, where he henceforth worked with a number of well-known directors, including Richard Thorpe , George Sidney , Mervyn LeRoy and Joseph L. Mankiewicz .

In 1950, Dunning received his first Oscar nomination for Best Editing for William A. Wellman's war film Kesselschlacht ( Battleground , 1949). However, he had to admit defeat to Harry W. Gerstad for Between Women and Ropes ( Champion , 1949). Ten years later, he and Ralph E. Winters received the coveted trophy for William Wyler's award-winning monumental epic Ben Hur ( Ben-Hur , 1959).

In the 1960s, John D. Dunning worked almost exclusively on American television series. In 1970 he retired from show business.
