John A. Dietz (born November 24, 1870 in Germany , † October 11, 1939 in New York City ) was an American sports marksman .

successes

John Dietz took part in the Olympic Games in London in 1908 and in Stockholm in 1912 . In both games he finished ninth with the free pistol in the individual competition, while he was both Olympic champion with the team . Together with James Gorman , Irving Calkins and Charles Axtell , he asserted himself in 1908 with 1914 points ahead of the Belgian and British teams. Dietz was the team's third-best shooter with 472 points. In the team competition in 1912, he came together with Alfred Lane , Henry Sears and Peter Dolfen to 1916 points, with which the US-Americans completed the competition before the Swedish and British teams. This time Dietz was the team's weakest shooter with 466 points. With the dueling pistol over the 30-meter distance, he missed another medal win in 1912, both individually and with the team, finishing fourth. In 1913 he was world champion in the team competition with the free pistol at Camp Perry .

Dietz was a career soldier and served most of his military service in the 71st Regimental Armory . He held the rank of lieutenant .
