from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johannes Duraeus , actually John Durie or Dury (* 1595 or 1596 in Edinburgh , † September 28, 1680 in Kassel ), was a Scottish Presbyterian theologian.

Life

He studied in Leiden and Oxford and in France became tutor and preacher for the English community in Elblag . Here he met Samuel Hartlib , who went to England with him.

When he went on a pilgrimage for interdenominational peace across continental Europe in 1631, Hartlib was his agent in London and kept his writings.

The unification of Lutherans and Reformed was his life's work. He converted from the Presbyterians to the Independents and tried since 1654 under the protectorate of Oliver Cromwell to unite the Reformed in the Old Confederation, in parts of Germany and in the Netherlands. In 1661 he left England forever and continued his efforts in Kassel with the support of Landgrave Hedwig Sophie . However, he was denied success.

Dury's daughter married the natural philosopher Henry Oldenburg .
