John Eager Howard (medic)

John Eager Howard (born August 27, 1902 in Baltimore , Maryland , † February 27, 1985 in Baltimore County , Maryland) was an American endocrinologist at Johns Hopkins University .

Life

Howard was the great-great-grandson of John Eager Howard (1752-1827), Revolutionary War general and first governor of Maryland.

Howard earned a bachelor's degree from Princeton University , New Jersey , in 1924 and an MD in 1928 from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland, where Fuller Albright and Read Ellsworth introduced him to scientific work in his final stages. Howard worked as an intern at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston between 1928 and 1930 and at Johns Hopkins University Hospital between 1930 and 1934, where he became a faculty member in 1934. Howard became Assistant Professor in 1937, Associate Professor in 1946 and full professor in 1960. Between 1957 and 1971 he was director of internal medicine at Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore. In 1968 he retired , but was still scientifically active. His last scientific paper appeared in 1981 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS).

Howard was one of the editors of scientific journals The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism and Johns Hopkins Medical Journal .

Howard was married. He and his wife Lucy had two children. John Eager Howards died in 1985 of complications from a stroke .

Act

Howard made important contributions to the understanding of the causes of arterial hypertension and the hormonal regulation of calcium metabolism . In particular, he succeeded in identifying a substance with citrate that inhibits the formation of kidney stones and other calcification processes in serum and urine . Together with Fuller Albright, Howard was one of the first to describe the milk-alkali syndrome .

Johns Hopkins University has held a John Eager Howard Professorship in Endocrinology and Metabolism since 1983 . The current job holder (as of 2012) is Paul W. Ladenson .
