He graduated from Brown University in Providence , Rhode Island in 1982 and enrolled in the law school of New York University Law School. However, he only passed the bar exam on the third attempt. He then worked for the New York District Attorney's Office until 1993 .

At the beginning of the 1980s he was in a relationship with the actress Daryl Hannah . He later had a brief relationship with actress Sarah Jessica Parker .

In 1999, the plane he was piloting with his wife and sister Lauren Bessette crashed on the way to the wedding of his cousin Rory Kennedy off Martha's Vineyard , an island in southern Massachusetts . All three occupants of the aircraft were killed. Kennedy had taken off from Essex County Airport in Fairfield New Jersey hours earlier . Investigations gave rise to the assumption that as a pilot, Kennedy had been overwhelmed with guiding the aircraft over the open sea when visibility was poor. His urn and those of his wife and sister were buried at sea on July 22, 1999 after a ceremony aboard the destroyer USS Briscoe between Martha's Vineyard and Hyannis Port .
