John Monks, Baron Monks

John Stephen Monks, Baron Monks (born August 5, 1945 in Manchester , England ) is a British trade union official and politician of the Labor Party .

Life

Monks attended Ducie Technical High School (later to 2003: Ducie High School, now Manchester Academy) near the University of Manchester on Lloyd Street North in the Moss Side district , Manchester. He studied economic and social history ( Economic History ) at the University of Nottingham .

From 1967 to 1969 he worked as a management trainee and junior manager at the electronics and telecommunications company Plessey Ltd in Surrey .

In 1969 he joined the Trades Union Congress (TUC), the umbrella organization for trade unions in Great Britain. Monks held various functions for the TUC in the following years. He was from 1969 from 1974 assistant in the organization department and then from 1974 to 1977 deputy secretary ( assistant secretary ) of the organization department. In 1977 he was at the TUC Head ( Head ) of the Organization and Industrial Relations Department. In 1987 he became Deputy General Secretary of the TUC. In 1993 he became the general secretary ( General Secretary elected TUC). He held this office until 2003.

In 2003 he became the general secretary of the European Trade Union Confederation , and elected (European Trade Union Confederation ETUC). In 2007 he was re-elected. His second term ended in 2011. As general secretary of the European Trade Union Confederation, Monks warned against the European Union's austerity policy being too harsh .

Monks was a member of various national and international bodies. He was a member of the Council of the Advisory Conciliation and Arbitration Service (ACAS) of Great Britain (1979–1995), a non-governmental organization dedicated to improving working conditions and supporting employers and employees, and the Economic and Social Research Council (1988–1991). He was also vice-chairman of the Learning and Skills Council, England (2001-2004) and, in 2000/2001, chairman of the Co-operative Commission, an independent commission set up by Tony Blair to support managers in cooperatives .

Since 2008 he has been Vice-President ( Vice-President ) of the association European Movement International . Monks is furthermore Chairman ( Chairman ) of the People's History Museum in Manchester. He is a member of the Council of the European Policy Center in Brussels and the Center for European Studies in London . He is visiting professor at Manchester Business School .

Membership in the House of Lords

On July 26, 2010, Monks was named a Life Peer . He bears the title of Baron Monks , of Blackley in the County of Greater Manchester. In the House of Lords he sits for the Labor Party.

Honors

Monks has been awarded several honorary doctorates . He has honorary degrees from the University of Nottingham, the University of Manchester, the University of Salford , Cranfield University and the University of Cardiff .

Personal

Monks married Francine Schenk in 1970 in North West Surrey. The marriage had three children, two sons and a daughter. Monk's hobbies include music , sports and hiking .

He supports Manchester United FC , Swinton Lions Rugby League Club and Lancashire County Cricket Club.
