John Netley

John Charles Netley (born May 19, 1860 in Paddington , London , United Kingdom , † September 20, 1903 in London, United Kingdom) was an English coachman . He was alleged to have been involved in the Whitechapel murders committed by Jack the Ripper in the fall of 1888 .

Life

Netley was born in Paddington , London in 1860, the second oldest of nine children . His father was John Netley (1831-1912), his mother was called Mary Ann (1833-1886).

In 1888, Netley was a carriage driver who drove around Queen Victoria's grandson in particular , Albert Victor, Duke of Clarence and Avondale . According to statements by John Sickert, he is said to have driven him to Whitechapel so that Gull could visit a brothel there. It is alleged that Netley drove around William Gull , the Queen's personal physician, while Ripper Gull murdered five prostitutes .

According to a report in the Marylebone Mercury and West London Gazette on September 26, 1903, Netley died in an accident when the wheel of his carriage hit a stone post in London's Park Road, where it was on Baker Street near Clarence Gate in Regent's Park meets. He fell from his wagon under the horses' hooves, where his head was crushed by a wheel.

In 1976 , in his book Jack the Ripper: The Final Solution , Stephen Knight , a journalist for the East London Advertiser , accused Netley of complicity in the Whitechapel murders. John Sickert, whose statement was the basis of the theory presented in the book, admitted in 1978 that it was a hoax , there is no evidence for it.

In the television film Jack the Ripper with Michael Caine , Netley is played by George Sweeney , with Netley acting as the driver of William Gull, who is portrayed as Jack the Ripper. Netley was also portrayed as Gull's accomplice in the graphic novel From Hell . In this version, Netley is appalled by Gull's plans and is described as a semi-educated person. In the 2001 film adaptation of the same name, with Johnny Depp in the lead role, Netley is played by Jason Flemyng . Netley also appeared in the fifth episode ( The Knife , OT : The Knife ) of the third season of the television series The Lost World , in which he was an accomplice to William Gull and police inspector Robert Anderson .
