John O'Hare (born September 24, 1946 in Dumbarton , Scotland ) is a former Scottish football player , who was best known as a player in the English first division clubs Derby County and Nottingham Forest . With Derby he won the English championship in 1972 and repeated this in 1978 with Nottingham. Two more titles followed in the European Cup in 1978/79 and 1980 .

Player career

John O'Hare started his playing career in 1963 at Sunderland AFC . Already in his first season in 1963/64 he was promoted to the first division with his team. There Sunderland was able to establish itself in the first year by rank 15, before the club in 1966 only just barely defended relegation with 19th place. After another year in the lower third of the table, John O'Hare changed clubs for the first time and played for Derby County in the future .

Derby County

Derby was only second class at the time, but had a very ambitious coaching team with Brian Clough and Peter Taylor . O'Hare made the leap into the upper house of English football with his new team in 1968/69 . In the following years he made a name for himself as a regular in his new club and celebrated his greatest success to date in the Football League First Division in 1971/72 by winning the English championship. As a titleholder, he then played in the European Cup of National Champions in 1972/73 and only failed there in the semifinals at Juventus Turin .

In 1974 he followed his coach Brian Clough, who had left Derby County after the 1972/73 season in dispute with the board. Clough took over the top English club Leeds United for the 1974/75 season and immediately signed his former players John McGovern and John O'Hare. The new season quickly turned into a nightmare, because Brian Clough fell out within a few weeks with the board, team and fans of the new club and was sacked shortly after the start of the season. Again O'Hare followed his coach when he took over the coaching post at the second division Nottingham Forest during the season .

Nottingham Forest

In the 1976/77 season, he was promoted to the first division and then the feat of winning the English championship in the Football League First Division 1977/78 as a climber . This was followed by the most successful time in O'Hare's career, because in the following two years he triumphed in the European Cup in 1978/79 and 1979/80 . A 1-0 win over Malmö FF or Hamburger SV was enough to win the title. In addition, the team won the English league cup in 1978 and 1979. His personally most successful season was O'Hare (40 games / 9 goals) 1975/76 in the second division. In the three first division years from 1978 to 1980 he was only used sporadically. The crowning glory of his career was the final in the National Champions Cup in 1980, when he came on for Gary Mills in the 67th minute and was thus able to contribute to the triumph. After this very successful season, the now almost 34-year-old O'Hare decided to end his playing career.

Scottish national football team

John O'Hare played his first international match for the Scottish national team on April 18, 1970 at an international match in Northern Ireland . He crowned his debut with his first international goal. In the following years twelve more internationals followed, in which he scored four goals. During this time he played with players like Billy Bremner , Archie Gemmill , Denis Law , Peter Lorimer and Kenny Dalglish . The selection was trained during this time by Bobby Brown and Tommy Docherty . His last international game he completed on May 24, 1972 against the Welsh national football team .
