John Sitaras (2018)

John Sitaras (* 1972 in Chios , Greece ) is an American fitness trainer of Greek origin who is known as the originator of the Sitaras method and as the founder of Sitaras Fitness in New York City . The method he developed requires an initial, extensive evaluation system that is similar to a general medical examination. Individualized exercises should be designed that are in accordance with the genetic predisposition, the fitness level, the state of health and the personal goals of each customer. As the clients progress, the assessment will periodically resume to reassess the exercises and track the clients' physical changes. Sitaras is the personal trainer of quite a few celebrities from different fields, such as E.g. the business tycoon George Soros , the economist and former president of the US Federal Reserve Paul Volcker , the former managing director of General Electric Jack Welch (who recovered from muscular atrophy under Sitara's care), the music producer David Geffen or the NASCAR champion Jimmie Johnson (who was the first racer to be recognized by the Associated Press Athlete of the Year , winning five consecutive championships).

The early years

Sitaras was born in Greece . His family moved to the United States when he was three months old. They eventually settled in Brooklyn . There he grew up in a difficult neighborhood, where he witnessed violence by gangs and experienced it firsthand. Ashamed of his slim physique, he started bodybuilding at the age of 17, entered bodybuilding competitions within a year, and finished fourth in his first regional competition in 1992. At about the same time, he enrolled in Brooklyn College , taking pre-medical courses, including psychology and nutrition. In 1993 he dropped out of school for financial reasons to focus on bodybuilding.

While he and his best friend Boris Levitsky were having lunch outside a Brooklyn restaurant in 1995, the two were attacked by a local gang. Levitsky was killed and Sitaras was forced to use a wheelchair for five months. The attack ended his bodybuilding career and resulted in deep depression. After his recovery, Sitaras took odd jobs for some time, such as B. valet parking, trucking, and acting before returning to the gym and working in fitness clubs. It was there that he built his customer base and reputation. He also worked with the American Academy of Pain Medicine at Lenox Hill Hospital, where he spent 18 months learning methods of treating acute and chronic pain, muscle spasms, and pre / post rehabilitation protocols.

Sitaras fitness

In his early career as a fitness trainer, John Sitaras designed his own system. As his following grew, he embarked on a plan to open his own gym. His plan was financed customers of some well-known Wall Street, which invested nearly $ 1.5 million, and so the club was Sitaras Fitness in November 2007 on the Upper East Side in Manhattan opened. It quickly became a place frequented by celebrities from various backgrounds, such as: For example, the business tycoon George Soros , the economist and former President of the US Federal Reserve Paul Volcker , the former CEO of General Electric Jack Welch , the music producer David Geffen or the NASCAR Champion Jimmie Johnson .

Aside from the fitness program, the gym also became a place for these members to socialize. At the same time it became necessary to adjust the schedules so that members who do not get along in the business world train at different times. Sitaras mentioned in an interview that he is "people who come for the wrong reasons," B. carefully sorted out to be close to famous artists. He added that not all of his clients are famous. The most important entry requirement is a high level of motivation and the will to take the program seriously.

A shareholder dispute arose in December 2008 when, in connection with the economic downturn, three of the nine board members wanted to make important changes to the club to increase memberships and revenues. They tried to remove Sitaras as managing director, lower his 53% ownership rate, and convert the gym into a club for the masses. The other shareholders took Sitara's side, so the three critics were paid off. The gym's membership remained limited to 200 (up from 144 in March 2012).

Sitaras method

The Sitaras method consists of an initial, extensive evaluation system (which can take between 6 and 12 sessions) to assess flexibility, cardiorespiratory fitness, strength, endurance and body fat. Sitaras takes into account the specific muscles of the client and isolates differences between the right and left sides of the body, between different parts of each muscle and the two main muscle fiber types (those for strength and endurance) in order to design a workout that is based on the genetic predisposition Fitness level, health status and goals are tailored to each client. An important goal is to develop muscle balance, which is the basis for specific goals like aesthetics, strength, and greater flexibility, or to develop a stronger athletic ability. Clients commit to exercising at least twice a week and are subject to a background check. Every three months, muscle assessment resumes using a range of instruments including digital scales, body fat and flexibility readers, and proprietary fitness software that helps track clients' strength gains over time. Based on the muscle assessment, the fitness programs are adjusted or redesigned. Customers can also follow their detailed physical changes, which gives them motivation and incentive.

The method is also used for physical recovery. Among the people who are known to have benefited is Jack Welch . He mentioned regaining his strength after being exposed to a bacterial infection that put him in a coma for 108 days and atrophied part of his arms and legs.

The concept of this method is based on Sitara's first experience as a fitness trainer, especially with regard to the lack of a scientific approach in this area, because the ordinary trainer only has empirical knowledge of the body condition of his client. He found it necessary to conduct an initial assessment - similar to a general medical examination that provides detailed evaluations and then provides the appropriate treatment. He also envisaged an assessment that is tailored to fitness goals that can provide detailed insights and help the trainer to adequately analyze the physical condition of his clients. In this way, the individual case of each customer can be better understood and the necessary steps can be determined. The location and severity of the damage or inflammation in muscles and tendons also differ from person to person; H. the exercises required should be differentiated accordingly.

Sitaras developed the system for five years, recording readings and developments before and after exercises, and exploring how to determine the principles and fundamentals of the effects of fitness training. When he started to put this method into practice, he described his approach as being inspired by architecture: first a foundation is created and then the structure is planned according to the specific goals of the clients (weight loss, flexibility, strength and energy, cardiovascular system -Health, etc.). The method, intensity and frequency of a tailored fitness program is created based on the analysis of basic factors such as age, medical history and skills, taking into account requirements and goals.

John Sitaras appears regularly on nationwide television explaining the long-term benefits of exercise by giving examples and offering advice.

Jimmie Johnson

One of the people most commonly associated with the Sitaras Method is NASCAR Sprint Cup racer Jimmie Johnson. We started working with John Sitaras in December 2007, shortly after Johnson was named 2007 Driver of the Year. An initial assessment found that half of his body was much more tense than the other as it had got used to balancing the straining g-force . This was created by turning to the left of the car when driving on the oval race track. Sitaras created special training to balance Johnson's strength, created a running program, and emphasized the importance of proper nutrition. Within two years, Johnson's body fat content dropped from 20% to 8% (also visible in the change in the shape of his face), while his strength and endurance improved significantly.

Jimmie Johnson was the first racing driver to be named Associated Press Athlete of the Year (2009) and the only driver in NASCAR history to win five consecutive championships. His story of working with Sitaras and the importance of fitness and nutrition to his career has been featured in various American media. He also encouraged the GAINSCO team to use this method.

International partnerships

In 2012 John Sitaras signed a partnership with the South Korean luxury hotel "The Shilla" and announced that on August 1, 2013 the Shilla-Sitaras fitness center in Seoul will open.

Foundation work

In 2008, Sitaras Fitness participated as a sponsor at the Princess Grace Awards Gala in New York City. John Sitaras was also a special guest speaker for the Turn 2 Foundation, a charity founded by Derek Jeter . Its mission is to help children and teenagers avoid drug and alcohol addiction and to reward those who demonstrate excellent academic performance and adopt healthy lifestyles. Originally from Brooklyn, he trained Brooklyn and Bronx children in physical fitness and made it clear to them how rewarding it is to pursue your dream.

In 2012, John Sitaras was one of the primary fundraisers for the American Cancer Society at the Over The Edge event, where he rappeled from a skyscraper.
