John Torrey Morse

John Torrey Morse (also John T. Morse , born January 9, 1840 in Boston , Suffolk County , Massachusetts , † March 27, 1937 in Needham , Norfolk County , Massachusetts) was an American historian , biographer and lawyer .

Life

Family and education

Born in Boston, John Torrey Morse, son of businessman John Torrey Morse senior (1813-1906) and Lucy Cabot Jackson Morse (1815-1891), graduated in 1860 with a Bachelor of Arts from Harvard University . He married Fannie Pope Hovey (1840-1922) on June 10, 1865. The marriage came from the son Cabot Jackson (1868-1946). John Torrey Morse died in March 1937 at the age of 97. He found his final resting place next to his wife in Mount Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge.

Professional background

John Torrey Morse opened his own law practice in Boston in 1862, and in 1876 he was a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives . In 1880 he resigned from his practice to devote himself entirely to writing. He served as co-editor of the International Review and editor of the American Statesmen Series. John Torrey Morse stood out in particular as a writer of biographies on American statesmen. Harvard University honored him in 1911 with the award of the Honrary Degree of Doctor of Letters (Litt. D. honoris causa).

In 1906 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters .
