John Vaught

John "Johnny" Howard Vaught (born May 6, 1909 in Olney , Texas , † February 3, 2006 in Oxford , Mississippi ) was an American football coach at the University of Mississippi . He worked there from 1947 to 1970 and again in 1973 .

Vaught , trained at Fort Worth Polytechnic and Texas Christian University, was a Lieutenant Commander in the United States Navy during World War II . In 1946 he took a job as an assistant coach at Ole Miss , which made him head coach the following year. After winning the university title in 1947 , he led the Rebels to other Southeastern Conference titles in 1954 , 1955 , 1960 , 1962 and 1963 .

He took his team to the 18 bowl games and won ten times the Sugar Bowl . 1979 Vaught was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame . In 1982 , Ole Miss changed the name of his football stadium from Hemingway Stadium to Vaught Hemingway Stadium .
