Archbishop John Walsh

John Walsh (born May 24, 1830 in Mooncoin , County Kilkenny , Ireland , † July 25, 1898 in Toronto ) was a Canadian Roman Catholic clergyman and Archbishop of Toronto .

Life

After attending St. John's College in Waterford , Ireland , he traveled to Canada in the fall of 1852, where he continued his studies at St. Sulpice Seminary in Montreal . On November 1, 1854 he was ordained a priest .

Pope Pius IX appointed him on June 4, 1867 bishop of the then Diocese of Sandwich in Ontario . The episcopal ordination donated him on November 10 of the same year in Toronto, the Archbishop of Québec Charles-François Baillargeon ; Co- consecrators were Ignace Bourget , Bishop of Montréal , and John Joseph Lynch CM, Bishop (later Archbishop) of Toronto. With the renaming of the Diocese of Sandwich, John Walsh became Bishop of London in Ontario on November 15, 1869 .

On August 13, 1889, John Walsh was raised to Archbishop of Toronto; he held this office until his death in 1898.
