Arthur Dietlein , since 1906 von Dietlein (born September 25, 1852 in Ohlau , † October 16, 1917 in Hanover ) was a Prussian lieutenant general and commander of the 19th division .

Life

Arthur was the son of the Prussian senior government councilor Heinrich Wilhelm Dietlein (1818-1894) and his wife Eleonore, née Steinmann (1832-1893).

Military career

After his upbringing in his parents' house and attending grammar schools in Breslau and Stralsund , Dietlein joined the Prussian Army's 5th Pomeranian Infantry Regiment No. 42 as a three-year-old volunteer at the beginning of the war against France on August 14, 1870 . He took part in the sieges of Metz and Paris , the battles at Champigny , Gray , Pesmes , Dole , Parcey , Mouchard , Salins and Pontarlier, and the occupation of the Jura department . After the peace treaty he was promoted to secondary lieutenant in the 2nd company of the regiment, which had meanwhile been stationed in Metz , at the beginning of June 1871 . From June to November 1874 Dietlein was assigned to do reconnaissance work in Alsace-Lorraine . For further training, he graduated from the War Academy from October 1877 to July 1881 , rose to Prime Lieutenant in March 1881 and a year later to regimental adjutant. In February / March Dietlein was sent to the governorate of Metz to learn the fortress telegraphy and in the summer of 1884 to the general staff training trip of the XV. Army Corps commands. Army Corps , he was transferred to the staff of the 1st Nassau Infantry Regiment No. 87 in Mainz in mid-October 1899 and promoted to Lieutenant Colonel on October 27, 1900 . On December 18, 1901, he was initially commissioned to lead the 4th Grand Ducal Hessian Infantry Regiment (Prince Carl) No. 118 in Worms, and on April 22, 1902, he was appointed as a colonel as regimental commander. With the renewed transfer to Mainz on March 20, 1906 Dietlein was entrusted with the leadership of the superior 50th Infantry Brigade (2nd Grand Ducal Hessian) and on April 10, 1906 appointed commander of this large unit.

In recognition of his services , Kaiser Wilhelm II raised him to the hereditary Prussian nobility on August 2, 1906, and Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig honored Dietlein on September 12, 1908 by awarding him Commander First Class of the Order of Merit of Philip the Magnanimous . On December 17, 1908, he was entrusted with the command of the 19th division stationed in Hanover , and on April 20, 1909, he was appointed commander of this division with the promotion to lieutenant general. In approval of his resignation request, Dietlein was put up for disposal on January 5, 1911, with the award of the star for the Order of the Red Eagle, 2nd class with oak leaves, with the statutory pension .

Dietlein married Alwine Stülcken (1863-1918) on June 23, 1887 in Hamburg . The following children were born from the marriage:

  • Heinrich (1888–1963), Prussian captain in the Magdeburg Dragoon Regiment No. 6 and from 1925 to 1963 boss and owner of the Hamburg Stülcken shipyard
