John Williams (actor)
John Williams (born April 15, 1903 in Chalfont , Buckinghamshire , England , † May 5, 1983 in La Jolla , California ) was a British actor .
Life
John Williams began his acting career at the age of 13 in theater in England and, as an adult, played on Broadway for many years . He also appeared in almost 40 films and over 40 television programs from 1930 to 1978. In addition to his film career, he gained reputation as the star of a television commercial for classical music. It became the longest-running commercial in US television history.
Williams received the 1953 Tony Award for Best Supporting Actor - (Best Supporting or Featured Actor Dramatic) for the Broadway production of Dial M For Murder he, in the role of Chief Inspector Hubbard took over. He also took on this part in 1954 in the film of the same name by Alfred Hitchcock . The film was the only Hitchcock film in 3D . In 1955 he was in the role of an insurance clerk in Over the Roofs of Nice again under Hitchcock's direction Williams also starred in several episodes of the television series Alfred Hitchcock Presents , for example in the episodes Back for Christmas (1956), Whodunit (1956) , Wet Saturday (Nasser Saturday, 1956), and Banquo's Chair (1959).
As an actor, Williams was best known for his portrayals of gentlemen with perfect manners, who were sometimes slick but polite. In addition to his collaboration with Hitchcock, Williams is also known for two films with Billy Wilder : In Sabrina , he played a lovable chauffeur and father of Audrey Hepburn's character, and in the prosecution he was seen as a fellow lawyer of Charles Laughton . Williams took on a role very similar to Chief Inspector Hubbard from On Call Murder in the 1960 thriller Midnight Peaks alongside Doris Day and Rex Harrison . Williams had one of his last appearances in the television series Columbo alongside Peter Falk in "Columbo - Age does not protect against folly" (1972).
John Williams died of an aneurysm on May 5, 1983 in La Jolla, California , leaving behind his wife Helen. His body was cremated and scattered in the Pacific.
