John Wurts
John Wurts (born August 13, 1792 in Flanders , Morris County , New Jersey , † April 23, 1861 in Rome , Italy ) was an American politician . Between 1825 and 1827 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .
Career
After the death of his father, John Wurts came with his family first to Montville and then to Philadelphia . Until 1813 he studied at Princeton College . After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer in 1816, he began to work in Philadelphia in this profession. At the same time he embarked on a political career. In 1817 he became a member of the House of Representatives from Pennsylvania ; in 1820 he was a member of the State Senate . He was a member of the Democratic Republican Party and joined the movement around the future President Andrew Jackson in the 1820s .
In the congressional elections of 1824 Wurtz was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the first constituency of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded Samuel Breck on March 4, 1825 . Since he renounced another candidacy in 1826, he could only complete one legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1827 . Wurts was a federal prosecutor between 1827 and 1831 . He sat on the Philadelphia City Council and was President of the Delaware & Hudson Canal Co. from 1831 to 1858. In 1859, he went abroad for health reasons. He died in Rome on April 23, 1861 and was buried in Atlantic County , New Jersey.
