Johnny Mullins

Johnny Lafayette Mullins (born October 23, 1923 in Cassville , Barry County , Missouri , † September 16, 2009 in Springfield , Missouri) was an American songwriter .

Life

Mullins grew up on his parents' farm. He taught himself to play the guitar and moved to Oregon in his early twenties , where he spent the next ten years as a lumberjack . He returned to Missouri in 1952, married, and was a janitor at a Springfield elementary school from 1957 until his retirement in 1982 .

In 1954 he wrote the title Company's Comin ' for country singer Porter Wagoner , his first Top-10 placement. Subsequently, his compositions were recorded by artists such as Emmylou Harris , the Wilburn Brothers , Red Foley , Hank Snow , Conway Twitty and Loretta Lynn . He celebrated his greatest success in 1980 when he was nominated as a Grammy Author for Blue Kentucky Girl, sung by Emmylou Harris . Although he lost the title You Decorated My Life by Kenny Rogers , Harris won the Grammy for Best Female Vocal Performance. In 1983 a biography appeared under the name America's Favorite Janitor: The Life Story of Country Songwriter Johnny Mullins . On October 3, 1992 should Sinéad O'Connor actually with her appearance on the television show Saturday Night Live as a second title Success sing a piece of Mullins. Before that, however, there was a scandal when she tore up a picture of Pope John Paul II on stage . In 2001 he was inducted into the Missouri Writer's Hall of Fame .

Mullins, who had Alzheimer's disease , had been in a nursing home since 2005.
