The Faust project is a theater production by the German director Peter Stein on the occasion of the Expo 2000 in Hanover in July 2000.

The performance of Goethe'sFaust I ” lasted 8 hours, of “ Faust II ” 14 hours. Not a word of the two plays was deleted and some directing instructions were also declaimed.

prehistory

Stein originally wanted to realize this project while he was still at the Berlin Schaubühne , but this was denied to him by internal quarrels with the then director Andrea Breth . Peter Stein has not worked with the Schaubühne since then.

As a result, at the end of the 1990s, with the help of Deutsche Bank, Frankfurt, he set up his own sponsoring company, the Faust Foundation, which was supposed to realize his dream project. He gathered around 80 employees, including an unusually large ensemble of over 35 actors. The rehearsal period lasted over a year.

The premiere took place in Hanover from July 22nd to 23rd, 2000. Further series of performances followed from October 21 , 2000 in Berlin ( Arena , Treptow) and from September 8 to December 16, 2001 in Vienna ( Kabelwerk ). The total playing time of both parts was over 21 hours and was spread over two days. It comprised all 12,110 verses of both parts of the drama and Goethe's stage directions.
