Christian Nickel

Christian Nickel (* 1969 in Heilbronn ) is a German actor and theater director .

Life

Growing up in Hamburg, Christian Nickel did community service in a hospital and then had the desire to become a doctor. After participating in some amateur productions, however, he decided to train as an actor, which he completed at the "Ernst Busch" Academy of Dramatic Arts in Berlin . There he was discovered by Peter Stein , under whose direction Nickel made his stage debut at the Salzburg Festival in 1997 in the role of Primislaus in Franz Grillparzer's tragedy Libussa . In the same year he was engaged at the Schauspiel Frankfurt . Further stations in his stage career were for several years the Vienna Burgtheater , the Residenztheater in Munich, the Schauspiel Köln , the Frankfurt Theater am Turm as well as the Maxim Gorki Theater and the Berliner Ensemble in Berlin . Nickel has been committed to the Theater in der Josefstadt since 2012 .

Some of Nickels roles were the title role in Peer Gynt by Henrik Ibsen and the male title character in William Shakespeare's drama Romeo and Juliet . He was also seen in Lady Windermeres Fan by Oscar Wilde , Before Sunset by Gerhart Hauptmann or a stage version of the novel Breakfast at Tiffany's by Truman Capote . Nickel achieved great fame as a stage actor in 2000 at the Hanover Expo when, within a few weeks, he took on the title role in the 21-hour production for Bruno Ganz in Peter Stein's Faust project, in addition to his own role as a young Faust. In 2006 and 2014 he took part in the Nibelungen Festival in Worms. 2016 played nickel at the Bad Hersfeld Festival to John Proctor in Arthur Miller's The Crucible , 2017, the title role in Martin Luther - The stop .

Since 2003 Christian Nickel has also worked as a director and has staged on stages in Hamburg, Karlsruhe, Salzburg and Stuttgart as well as at the Luisenburg Festival in Wunsiedel. For the Vienna Burgtheater he realized a version of his colleague Dorothee Hartinger 's novel Die Wand by Marlen Haushofer for the stage; this production has been running regularly on the staircase of the Vienna Burgtheater since 2012 .

Nickels trips in front of the camera are rare. In 1999 he starred in the film adaptation of the novel Der Vulkan , in 2004 he was seen as mayor in Joseph Vilsmaier's film Bergkristall , in 2005 Nickel played Ernst Speer in the three-part documentary drama Speer and Er . Furthermore, he has occasionally worked as a radio play speaker in the past.

Christian Nickel currently lives in Vienna.
