Johnson Toribiong

Johnson Toribiong (born July 22, 1946 in Airai ) was the President of Palau from 2009 to 2013 . In the presidential election on November 4, 2008 , he won the runoff election with 51% against his challenger Elias Camsek Chin . On January 1, 2009, he succeeded Tommy Remengesau . On January 17, 2013, he handed the official duties back to Remengesau.

Toribiong graduated from the University of Washington School of Law with a degree in law in 1972 as a Doctor Juris and in 1973 as a Master of Laws . From 2001 to 2005 he was his country's ambassador to Taiwan .

During his tenure as president, Palau agreed to accept Uyghurs detained in the Guantanamo Bay Naval Base detention center , and on September 25, 2009 the world's first shark sanctuary was designated.
