Jon Ola Norbom
Jon Ola Hauger Norbom (born December 15, 1923 in Bærum - † April 12, 2020 ) was a Norwegian economist and politician of the liberal party Venstre . He was his country's finance minister from October 1972 to October 1973 .
Life
After finishing school in 1942, Norbom began studying social economics at the University of Oslo . This was interrupted by the Second World War, but he was able to finish his studies in 1949. Between 1950 and 1952 he was chairman of the youth organization Unge Venstre . From 1950 to 1954 he worked as a secretary in the Ministry of Industry. Between 1952 and 1953 he attended the College of Europe in Bruges , Belgium .
In 1954 Norbom moved to New York City , where he initially worked as a research assistant at the National Bureau of Economic Research until 1955 . He then worked as a statistician at the United Nations (UN), also in New York, until 1959 . In 1959 he moved to Geneva , where he was now again working in research on the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT). Between February 1967 and October 1969, Norbom served under Finance Minister Ole Myrvoll as State Secretary in the Norwegian Ministry of Finance . One of his main tasks at this time was the development of a new tax system. In 1971 he became head of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD).
On October 18, 1972, he was appointed Minister of Finance in the Korvald bourgeois government . His term of office lasted until the departure of the government on October 16, 1973. He then returned to his previous post as head of UNCTAD, which he held until 1983. He spent the remaining years of his professional career between 1984 and 1993 in the Norwegian Ministry of Social Affairs as a so-called Departementsråd . Norbom was the highest official in this ministry and reported directly to the respective minister of social affairs.
