Jon Savage (actually Jonathon Sage, * 1953 in London ) is a British pop music journalist and publicist. He was best known for his highly acclaimed books England's Dreaming from 1991 (German 2001) and Teenage from 2007 (German 2008).

Life and work

Sage grew up as the son of a businessman in the British capital, London. He graduated from Cambridge University . Age of 23 he gave a private Punk - Fanzine out "London's Outrage". He worked as a journalist for the music magazines Sounds and New Musical Express from 1977 until the 1980s. From 1979 he worked for the rock music journal Melody Maker . During the 1980s, Savage wrote regularly as a pop music critic for the respected British daily newspapers The Observer and the New Statesman .

His breakthrough as a professional author marked his book England's Dreaming in 1991. Four years later, in 1995, the BBC produced a documentary "Punk and the Pistols" based on Savage's book. In 2001 there was a revised new edition. Savage published more journalistic in the music magazine Mojo and The Observer Music Monthly . Together with Hanif Kureishi , he published the pop culture encyclopedia The Faber Book of Pop in 1995. His monograph Time Travel: Pop, Media and Sexuality, 1976-96 appeared a year later. In it he analyzed the pop cultural events in the two decades since the emergence of the punk and new wave movements.

His next, highly regarded book, which earned him the label "Pophistoriker", was Teenage: The Creation of Youth Culture , which originally appeared in 2007, with a German translation a year later. In years of source work, he has evaluated archives accessible to him (linguistically) from various Central and Western European nations and the USA. The echo of the reviews of this pioneering achievement was remarkable and international.

In addition to his journalistic contributions, books, and essays, Savage has also made a name for itself through a number of expertly compiled pop-historical CD compilations.
