Jonas Engel

Jonas Engel (born October 31, 1990 in Schlüchtern ) is a German jazz musician ( alto saxophone , composition ).

Engel, who grew up in Sannerz , started playing in the LandesJugendJazzOrchester Hessen at the age of 16, with whom he took part in the album Kicks & Sticks (2010). After graduating from high school, he did his military service with the Berlin staff music corps of the Bundeswehr . Then he studied jazz saxophone at the Cologne University of Music and Dance with Roger Hanschel , Claudius Valk , Frank Gratkowski and Hubert Nuss . Since 2014 he has played in the Federal Jazz Orchestra for two years and was involved in its CD Grove and the Abstract Truth (2016).

With Anthony Greminger and Florian Herzog he founded the trio Just Another Foundry , whose album of the same name was released in 2017 on Double Moon Records . With tenor saxophonist Kārlis Auziņš as well as David Helm and Dominik Mahnig , he formed the quartet Own Your Bones , which released its album of the same name on Klaeng Records in 2018 . With the poet and pianist Eliot Cardinaux , the bassist Asger Thomsen and drummer Etienne Nillesen , he released the album Our Hearts As Thieves in 2018 . He was also active as a saxophonist and composer in various projects, including with Thea Soti and Bastian Weinig . Tours have taken him to many European countries, South America, the Middle East, China and Southeast Asia.
