Thea Soti
Thea Soti (born September 3, 1989 in Subotica , Yugoslavia ) is a Hungarian singer and composer .
Live and act
Soti, who first grew up in Serbia, received classical music lessons from the age of six. As a classical pianist, she won several international competitions. From 2005 she opened up to other genres such as jazz music , first in Budapest, later in Berlin, where she received lessons from Esther Kaiser and Lisa Bassenge . She wanted to direct and therefore first studied film and media studies . From 2010 she studied jazz singing and composition at the Hanover University of Music, Drama and Media with Romy Camerun and Julia Hülsmann and at the University of Lucerne with Susanne Abbuehl . Then followed a master’s degree at the Cologne University of Music and Dance . A central concern of her is working with the human voice and the combination of free improvisation with open composition.
In 2010 Soti founded the world music project Nanaya (with Daniel S. Scholz ( oud ), Johannes Keller (double bass) and Jonas Pirzer (drums)), in which she sings mostly in Hungarian. She has performed in Central Europe, but also in Southern Europe and Eastern Europe with this and other bands, such as Manivolanti , the Viktor Bürkland Trio and the Thea Soti Quartet .
Soti is a founding member of the composers collective Sung Sound , which has worked with various big bands. She has composed for large-format ensembles such as the Modern Art Orchestra , The Daniel Sebastian Scholz Big Band , the Subway Jazz Orchestra , Fette Hupe, Cherry Tree Orchestra and the Tonhallen Orchestra .
Furthermore she belongs to the jazz trio RYMM with Salim Javaid (saxophone) and Anthony Greminger (drums). Her performance concert "Electrified Islands" - Avantgarde Songs for 4 voices and orchestra with Taya Chernyshova , Mascha Corman , Rebekka Salomea , Thea Soti, Leonhard Huhn , Moritz Wesp , Elisabeth Coudoux , Sebastian Scobel , Stefan Schönegg , Anthony was performed several times in 2017 and 2018 Greminger.
Prizes and awards
In 2014 Soti won the second prize at the international composition competition JazzComp Graz.
