Moritz Wesp

Moritz Wesp (* 1990 in Frankfurt am Main ) is a German jazz musician ( trombone , composition ).

Live and act

Wesp first studied trombone and composition at the Lucerne School of Music (2011-2014) with Nils Wogram and Ed Partyka and graduated in 2018 from the Cologne University of Music and Dance , where Siegfried Köpf , Dieter Manderscheid , Henning Berg , Frank Gratkowski and Hubert Nuss taught.

He played in the big band of the Immanuel-Kant-Schule in Rüsselsheim (IKS-Swing-Kids), the IKS big band and in other big bands in the Rhine-Main area, from 2008 to 2012 in the junior orchestra and LandesJugendJazzOrchester Hessen and from 2012/13 in the Federal jazz orchestra under the direction of Niels Klein and Jiggs Whigham . In 2015 he recorded a CD with the Daniel Sebastian Scholz Big Band and is currently active in the Hive Mind project with Benjamin Schaefer (2018/2019).

Wesp founded the first quartet in 2010 with Nico Hering (piano), Bastian Weinig (double bass) and Florian Schwappacher (drums), who recorded his compositions on two CDs (“Tauchgang”, “die Beobachter”) [2], and in 2014 the tentet Wespennest . Wesp has been working in Cologne with other band projects since the mid-2010s, such as the Trio Avocado (with Alexander Dawo , bass and Leif Berger , drums), expanded to the Moritz Wesp Quintet (with Anna-Lena Schnabel , alto saxophone, and Yannis Anft , synthesizer ). In 2017 he recorded a CD of the same name in Katrin Scherer's CLUSTER Quartet together with Stefan Schönegg and Leif Berger (Green Deer, 2018), combined with several concerts. In addition to these projects, he can currently be heard with Leif Berger's Sextet and in the project " Thea Soti Electrified Islands". In the band NOW MY LIFE IS SWEET LIKE CINNAMON , Wesp (synth trombone, analog-electronic instruments) breaks new ground in electronic music together with Eric Haupt , Raphael Röchter and Anthony Greminger .

Awards

In 2012 Wesp was the third prize winner at the Jazzverk International Big Band Composition Competition in Sweden. He received first and second prizes in the Jugend Jazzt Hessen composition competition Combo (2010) and Big Band (2013/14).

With his quartet he won the state competition Jugend jazzt Hessen in 2010 and 2012, in 2013 the studio prize of the Deutschlandfunk at the federal youth meeting and also in 2013 with the band Ropesh the “Young German Jazz Prize”.
