Jonas Olsson (born March 10, 1983 in Landskrona ) is a Swedish football player . The defender has played in Sweden, the Netherlands and England in his career so far.

Career

Career start in Sweden

Olsson comes from the youth of Landskrona BoIS . In the 2002 season he moved up to the squad of the first division team, but had to wait until the following season before he made his debut in the Allsvenskan . In the course of the season he was able to establish himself as a regular player in central defense . On April 30, 2003, he also came to his first appearance in the Swedish U21 team. However, this was his only game that year. Especially in the 2004 season he drew attention to himself with his robust style of play and saw the most yellow cards in the league. At the same time he played his way back to the junior national team. In 2005 he also took over the position of team captain at the club before leaving the club for the Netherlands in the summer.

Change abroad

Olsson's new employer was NEC Nijmegen in the Eredivisie in the summer of 2005 , who paid a transfer fee of 750,000 euros for the defender. Here, too, he was able to establish himself as a regular player, where he is also used as a left full- back in the Dutch elite series . He was voted "Player of the Year" by supporters of the club in the 2006/07 season.

Although Olsson had a contract that ran until 2009 , the defender , who was coached by former professional Martin Dahlin , has been linked to several European clubs thanks to his good performances in the Eredivisie. At the end of August, Premier League promoted West Bromwich Albion announced the Swedes for £ 800,000 transfer fee. From mid-September he established himself as a regular in the club's defensive row, but could not prevent relegation as bottom of the table. Even in the second division, he remained loyal to the club and was also part of the regular formation under coach Roberto Di Matteo . His achievements were honored by national coach Erik Hamrén , who nominated him for the international match against the Welsh national team in early March 2010 . In the 1-0 win with a goal from Johan Elmander , however, he was not used. In June of that year he finally made his debut against Belarus .

In the meantime, Olsson was promoted back to the Premier League with his club in the summer of 2010. Here he was under Di Matteo and his successor Roy Hodgson from February 2011 , and he also established himself in the national team. With this he qualified for the European Championship finals in 2012 , in which he was used in two group games. Nevertheless, the selection was eliminated from the tournament as last in the group. After Hodgson took over the leadership of the English national team after the European Championship tournament , Olsson got a new trainer in the form of Steve Clarke from Scotland . As a result, he remained a regular player in the defensive line and temporarily advanced to deputy team captain . After an eighth place in the table in the 2012/13 season , he achieved relegation in the following season on the last non-relegation place. Also due to an injury, he only made 13 season appearances in the 2014/15 season. He had already moved out of the focus of the national team in autumn 2013 after they had not qualified for the 2014 World Cup tournament. Due to good performances in the second half of the season, however, he briefly returned to the national team in the summer of 2015, while he had become a regular at club level again, but was no longer considered by national coach Erik Hamrén from autumn of that year .

Return to Sweden

After only seven season appearances for Olsson in the first two-thirds of the Premier League season 2016/17 , he returned to Sweden in March 2017 and joined the Stockholm club Djurgårdens IF . He signed a two-year contract with the ambitious first division club, who signed Andreas Isaksson and Kim Källström with other experienced former national players.
