Jonathan Bailey KCVO (born February 24, 1940 in Liverpool , † December 9, 2008 ) was a British Anglican theologian and Bishop of Derby .

Jonathan Bailey studied at Trinity College of the University of Cambridge and the Ridley Hall College , Cambridge. His first position as a priest was in St Helens in 1965 . From there he switched to the management of a youth education center and in 1976 took over a pastor's position in Wetherby . In 1982 he was called to be Archdeacon of Southend , a position he held for ten years. He then became a suffragan bishop of Dunwich . After only three years in that office, he was recalled from Suffolk and made Bishop of Derby in 1995. As Bishop of Derby, he was a member of the House of Lords from 1997 . In 2005, Jonathan Bailey retired.

In addition to serving as a priest, Jonathan Bailey has held various positions in Church administration. His most prominent position besides his episcopate was that of the Clerk of the Closet . This is a historical function; the holder of this office is a personal advisor to the monarch on theological and ecclesiastical questions. For his work as Clerk of the Closet, Elisabeth II awarded Jonathan Bailey the Royal Victorian Order in 2005 .

Jonathan Bailey had been married since 1965 and the couple had three sons. His wife was ordained a priestess in 1994 , which made him the first Anglican bishop to supervise his wife.
