Peter Dawes

Peter Spencer Dawes (born February 5, 1928 ) is a British Anglican theologian . He was Bishop of Derby in the Church of England from 1988 to 1995 .

Dawes attended Aldenham School in Hertfordshire and studied at Hatfield College, the University of Durham . In 1955 he was ordained a priest . He began his priestly career as a vicar ( curate ) at St Andrew's Church in the Whitehall Park borough of London and St Ebbe's Church in Oxford . He was then a tutor at Clifton Theological College and pastor ( vicar ) at the Church of the Good Shepherd in Romford . From 1980 to 1988, he Archdeacon ( Archdeacon ) from West Ham . In 1988 he was ordained a bishop . In 1988 he became Bishop of Derby , succeeding Cyril Bowles . In 1995 he retired. He was succeeded as Bishop of Derby by Jonathan Bailey . After his retirement in 1995, he was made Honorary Assistant Bishop in the Diocese of Ely .

Dawes was director ( director ) of the Derby Diocesan Board of Finance (May 1991-July 1995) and Trinity College in Bristol (June 1991-November 1996). He was a member of the evangelical wing of the Church of England.

Dawes was a member of the Electoral Reform Society (ERS). In the UK suffrage referendum in May 2011, Dawes was co-owned with Bishops Alan Smith (St Albans), John Packer (Ripon and Leeds), Michael Langrish (Exeter), Martyn Jarrett (Beverley), Nigel Stock (St Edmundsbury and Ipswich ), Alan Wilson (Buckingham), Michael Perham (Gloucester), Colin Buchanan (former Bishop of Woolwich) and David Atkinson (former Bishop of Thetford) among the proponents of senior voting .
