Jordan Airways was a Jordanian airline based in Amman and based at the local airport Marka . The company ceased operations in December 1963.

history

The scheduled airline Jordan Airways was founded on September 1, 1961 in Amman . The state of Jordan held 35% of the company and the Lebanese Middle East Airlines (MEA) held a 25% stake, the remaining shares were held by private investors. At the same time as it was founded, the Jordanian government withdrew their operating license from all other airlines in the country . This affected Air Jordan , founded in 1950, and Jordan International Airlines , founded in 1954, both of which had to cease operations on September 13, 1961.

Jordan Airways began operations on September 29, 1961 with a Douglas C-47 (DC-3) leased from MEA . One day later, the company received the first leased Vickers 754D Viscount from MEA, a second Viscount followed on October 7, 1961. In May 1962, the Jordan Airways network from Amman included the destinations Beirut , Damascus , Doha , Jeddah , Jerusalem (then belonging to Jordan), Cairo and Kuwait .

In 1963, King Hussein decided to end the cooperation with MEA and instead set up a new Jordanian airline. This resulted in Alia Royal Jordanian Airlines on December 9, 1963 , which opened its flight operations on December 15, 1963 and took over the route network and the two leased Vickers Viscounts from Jordan Airways.
