José Baviera

José Baviera (born August 17, 1906 in Valencia as José Luis Baviera Navarro , Spain , † August 13, 1981 in Mexico City , Mexico ) was a Mexican actor , director and screenwriter of Spanish origin.

biography

Baviera initially wanted to become a doctor, then did his military service in the Spanish colonies in Africa, which he finished with the rank of captain ("capitán"). Jose Baviera began his artistic career in 1927. After the Spanish Civil War , he went to Mexico, where he finally settled in 1940.

In Mexico, Baviera directed several times and played roles in works such as the Alexandre Dumas film adaptation Camelia , worked in Luis Buñuel's Der Würgeengel (1962) and played the role of Pontius Pilate several times ( Jesús de Nazareth , 1942; María Magdalena, pecadora de Magdala 1946; Reina de reinas: La Virgen María 1948; El mártir del calvario , 1952).

José Baviera died of cardiac arrest in Mexico on August 13, 1981.

Awards

In 1946 he was awarded an Ariel in the category Best Supporting Male Role ( Coactuación Masculina ) for the film La barraca , a film adaptation of the novel La barraca , made a year earlier . In 1978 he received the Virginia Fábregas Medal from the Asociación Nacional de Actores (ANDA), which he joined in 1940, for more than 25 years of uninterrupted acting.
