José Cochrane de Alencar

José Cochrane de Alencar OBE (born November 19, 1898 in Berlin , † 1971 ) was a Brazilian diplomat .

Life

José Cochrane de Alencar was a son of Augusto Cochrane de Alencar. He holds a Bachelor of Laws from the University of London . He joined the Itamaraty foreign service in 1923 . From 1924 to 1928 he was the legation secretary in Oslo , where he was chargé d'affaires in 1927. From 1929 to 1931 he was legation secretary in Prague , where he was chargé d'affaires in 1929. From 1931 to 1933 he was the legation secretary in Ankara . From 1933 to 1936 he was the secretary of the embassy in Bogotá , where he was chargé d'affaires from December 6, 1935 to September 18, 1936. From 1937 to 1944 he was in London , where he was promoted to Secretary of State First Class in 1938. In September 1941 and 1943 he was an observer of the Inter-Allied Committee on Post-War Requirements (Frederick Leith-Ross Committee).

In 1944 he was executive delegate to the European Council of the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration . From April 25, 1945 to June 26, 1945 he was a delegate to the San Francisco Conference . In 1946 he was Consul General in San Francisco . From 1948 to October 8, 1949 he was Chargé d'affaires in New Delhi . From December 20, 1949 to March 29, 1954 he was Envoy Extraordinary and Ministre plénipotentiaire in Canberra . From March 16, 1955 to September 24, 1956, he was ambassador to Karachi . From October 2, 1956 to September 12, 1961 he was Ambassador to New Delhi. On September 17, 1961, he was appointed Ambassador to London, where he was Ambassador to the Court of St James’s from October 27, 1961 to November 18, 1963 .

Cochrane was married from 1933 to 1964 to Gertrude von Schwarzenfeld (actually Gertrude Schreitter von Schwarzenfeld , * 1906), a granddaughter of Adolf Schram .
