José Francisco Graziano da Silva (born November 17, 1949 in Urbana , Illinois, USA) was Director General of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). The Brazilian economist , agronomist , university professor and author was elected on June 26, 2011 and took office on January 1, 2012 as the successor to Jacques Diouf , who has been in office since 1994 . After his second term in office, he was replaced on August 1, 2019 by the Chinese Qu Dongyu .

Life

Graziano da Silva was born in the United States to Brazilian parents. In 1972 he graduated as an agricultural engineer from the University of São Paulo , where he obtained a master's degree in 1974 with a thesis on income distribution in Brazil. In 1980 he received his doctorate from the Universidade Estadual of Campinas . He completed post-doctoral studies at the University of California and University College London . In Campinas he was then appointed professor of agricultural economics.

Since 1977 Graziano da Silva has dealt with problems such as rural development and the fight against hunger, in addition to his academic work, union and political. During Lula da Silva's first term in office , he briefly became extraordinary minister for food safety and the fight against hunger in 2003/2004. In 2004 he was promoted to Ordinary Minister of the newly created Ministério do Desenvolvimento Social e Combate à Fome - Ministry of Social Development and Fight Against Hunger . He played a key role in the drafting of Lula's successful anti-hunger program Fome Zero .

In 2006 he became the FAO's regional representative for Latin America and the Caribbean .

He ran for the post of FAO Director General with the support of former Brazilian President Lula da Silva. He was elected on June 26, 2011 with 92 out of 180 possible votes. Following a reform, his first term of office ran for four years with the possibility of one re-election. In June 2015 he was re-elected for a second term until July 2019 with 177 out of 182 votes.

Awards

José Graziano da Silva has received several awards for his work. The following are known, among others:

  • Rio Branco Order (Comendador Ordem de Rio Branco), awarded in April 2006.
  • “Tagaloaletoaolemalaeoletoto” ( Samoan title), bestowed on April 12, 2013.
  • Grand Cross of Italy (Cavaliere di Gran Croce), awarded on April 12, 2016.
  • "Zero Hunger Champion Award", presented on July 15, 2019.
  • "Nutrition Inspiration Award", presented on July 26, 2019.
