Josephus "Jos" Elisabeth AM Geysels (born September 20, 1952 in Turnhout , Antwerp province , Belgium ) is a former Belgian politician of AGALEV and since 2007 chairman of 11.11.11 , a non-governmental organization for development cooperation .

biography

As a schoolboy, he took part in the protests of the 1968 movement and studied sociology at the University of Antwerp after attending school . After completing his studies, he was coordinator at a community college between 1975 and 1985 .

He began his political career as a candidate for the AGALEV in 1987, when he was first elected a member of the Chamber of Deputies . In 1991 he was one of the co-founders of the so-called “ Cordon sanitaire ” against the right-wing extremist Flemish party Vlaams Blok .

After resigning from the Chamber of Deputies in 1995, he was elected a member of the Flemish Parliament and was also the chairman of the AGALEV parliamentary group . During Wilfried Bervoets 'illness he was also acting political secretary of AGALEV between September and December 1997 and after Bervoets' death on July 24, 1998.

As acting political secretary, he sought distance from the green movement Anders Gaan Leven of the Jesuit priest and co-founder of AGALEV, Luc Versteylen . In the elections to the Chamber of Deputies on June 13, 1999, the party won a vote and then became part of the coalition government under Prime Minister Guy Verhofstadt . Despite his leading position in the party, however, it was not he who was appointed to Verhofstadt's first government , but Magda Aelvoet as Minister for Consumer Protection, Public Health and the Environment.

After his re-election as member of the Flemish Parliament on July 6, 1999, after the planning congress on October 23, 1999, he was also elected political secretary of the party, although this connection of offices expressly contradicted the current AGALEV statutes.

For his political merits he was awarded the honorary title of Minister of State on January 28, 2002 , and with it membership in the Privy Council .

After AGALEV's defeat in the parliamentary elections on May 18, 2003, he resigned as the party's political secretary on May 20, 2003. After the party on November 15, 2003 in Groen! was renamed, was Vera Dua its first chairman.

In 2005 he was Prime Minister Verhofstadt's special envoy for the establishment of institutions and adviser to his second government . As such, he was also sent to crisis regions and war zones such as Rwanda to offer Belgian aid to rebuild state structures. At his own request, he gave up this position on February 1, 2007.

Since June 20, 2007 he has been chairman of the independent development aid organization 11/11/11 .
