Mock architecture at the sister house in Elbigenalp, around 1820

Köpfle first made an apprenticeship as a bricklayer and then learned painting from Franz Anton Zeiller (according to other information from Johann Jakob Zeiller ). From 1787 to 1789 he studied at the Imperial City Art Academy in Augsburg . Afterwards he settled down as a painter in his hometown and married Kreszentia Pohler. He had six children with her. He created frescoes and oil paintings and in particular perspective architectural paintings. His first best-known work is the depiction of the Last Supper (1793). This picture is now in the museum in the Green House in Reutte. Because Köpfle was to be deployed to defend the Kniepass in 1800, he promised to paint the church in his home parish in courtyards if he was spared this service. From 1805 he beautified many house facades in the Tyrolean Ausserfern, in 1816 also that of his house. He died very old on January 14, 1843.

His son of the same name Joseph Anton Köpfle (1807–1879) also became a painter. Some of his holy graves in the Ausserfern are known.
