Josef Blank (theologian)

Josef Jakob Blank (born September 8, 1926 in Ludwigshafen ; † October 2, 1989 in Homburg ) was a Roman Catholic theologian and professor at the Saarland University in Saarbrücken .

Life

Josef Blank was born in 1926 as the son of foreman Gregor Blank and his wife Katharina. After visiting the Episcopal Konvikt in Speyer , Blank had to take part in the Second World War in 1943 and was briefly a prisoner of war in 1945. From 1946 to 1951 he studied Catholic theology and philosophy in Tübingen and Munich and was ordained a priest in Speyer in 1951. In the same year he began working as a chaplain in the Diocese of Speyer . From 1956 he continued his theology studies in Würzburg and was awarded a Dr. theol. PhD. He then worked as an assistant at the chair for the New Testament in Würzburg until 1969. During this time he completed his habilitation in 1967 and received his venia legendi in the New Testament subject . From 1968 he was a founding member of the editorial group of the Evangelical-Catholic Commentary on the New Testament .

In 1969 the University of Saarland appointed him first professor for New Testament exegesis and biblical theology . He also became director of the Institute for Catholic Theology at the university until the institute was integrated into the philosophy faculties in 1973.
