Josef Enengl

Josef Enengl (born September 4, 1926 in Kallham in the Hausruckviertel ; died April 26, 1993 in Vienna-Ottakring ) was an Austrian poet , storyteller and essayist .

Life

After attending secondary school in Linz, Enengl studied German literature and philosophy in Graz and Vienna and received his doctorate with a dissertation on Sören Kierkegaard . He became interested in the fine arts at an early age and was friends with Alfred Kubin , Fritz Wotruba , Emilio Vedova and Karl Anton Wolf . In 1950 the first essays on Wotruba and Kierkegaard appeared, he published studies on Kubin, Ensor , Picasso and others and in the literary and art magazine Freibord , which was co-founded by Hermann Schürrer, his “dream records”, fantastic poems and stories were reprinted. After poetry publications in Merkur , the Neue Deutsche Hefte and the Neue Wegen , the first volume of poetry Der Vogel Simurg was published in 1957 . In his poetry and prose, Enengl was close to surrealism without ever feeling that he belonged to a specific literary group. In his last years Enengl lived in seclusion in the Viennese working class district Ottakring.
