Joseph Michael Feid (born February 21, 1806 in Vienna , † April 8, 1870 in Weidling , Lower Austria ) was an Austrian painter .

Life

Josef Feid was born in the then Viennese suburb of Wieden No. 519 (today Rechts Wienzeile 30) as the son of Michael Veit, a school clerk at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts . Feid first studied architecture under Peter von Nobile at the academy , but then turned to landscape painting . From 1828 he exhibited at the exhibitions of the academy, from 1850 also at the New Austrian Art Association. Feid was good friends with the famous landscape painter Friedrich Gauermann , with whom he also worked.

Josef Feid was buried in the Weidlinger Friedhof . The Feidweg in Weidling and the Feidstraße in Vienna-Atzgersdorf were named in his honor.

Josef Feid was a pure landscape painter who preferred to depict motifs from the area around Vienna and the Salzkammergut . Particularly typical for him is the design of forest landscapes, which in 1903 earned him the name “Forest Man from the Vienna Woods” by the art critic Ludwig Hevesi .
