Josef Hofmann (politician, 1927)
Josef Hofmann (born March 23, 1927 in Hausen ; † August 14, 2016 in Mainz ) was a German lawyer and politician ( CDU ).
Life and work
After graduating from elementary school and attending grammar schools in Hadamar and Limburg an der Lahn , Hofmann took part in the Second World War as a soldier in 1944/45 . He then continued his school career and passed the Abitur in Limburg in 1947. Then he began to study law and economics at the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz , which he both state examination and awarded the degree of Dr. jur. finished. In 1957 he opened his own law firm in Mainz-Bretzenheim .
Hofmann was President of the International Council of European Municipalities and Regions (CEMR) from 1984 to 1992 , its Honorary President since 1988 and its Vice-President since 1992. From 1994 to 2000 he was both President and Vice-President of the Chamber of European Municipalities at the Council of Europe .
Hofmann died in 2016 at the age of 89 at his place of residence in Mainz-Bretzenheim.
Political party
Hofmann joined the CDU in 1953 and was elected to the board of the CDU district association in Mainz.
MP
Hofmann was a council member of the city of Mainz in 1960/61 and again from 1989. He was a member of the German Bundestag from 1965 to 1969, where he represented the Mainz constituency .
Public offices
Hofmann was mayor of Mainz from 1961 to 1985. At the same time, as city treasurer, he took over the management of the finance department. From 1985 to 1989 he was an honorary councilor for the city.
