Josef Kuwasseg (born November 25, 1799 in Trieste , † March 19, 1859 in Graz ) was an Austrian landscape painter , lithographer and writer .

Life

Josef Kuwasseg (also Kuwassegg, Kuwasegk) was born as the son of the businessman Josephus Kubasseg and Rosa Hehemperger. Josef was the eldest of four sons and had one sister. His two brothers Karl Josef Kuwasseg (1802–1877) and Leopold (1804–1862) also became painters and lithographers. In 1809 the family moved to Graz. After the early death of his father, he grew up with an uncle in Luttenberg . Even then his talent for drawing was evident. Supported by sponsors, he was able to attend the Ständische Zeichenakademie in Graz under Andreas Hardter (1780–1816) and Josef August Stark (1782–1838) in 1817 and 1818 . From 1824 he worked for the Graz publishing houses Joseph Franz Kaiser and Heribert Lampel. From 1826 to 1832, at times together with his younger brother Karl, at the lithographic institute of the brothers Matthäus and Josef Trentsensky in Vienna as a draftsman and lithographer. In 1830 Josef Kuwasseg returned to Graz and continued his lithographic work with the Graz publishing houses Josef Franz Kaiser and later with Heribert Lampel. In addition, he was involved in the planning of the new parks on the Graz Schloßberg by Ludwig Freiherr von Welden (1780-1853). For Franz Unger , palaeobotanist at the University of Graz , he worked as a lithograph from 1851 to 1858.

Josef Kuwasseg was married twice, with Maria Frey († 1844) and Marianne Kernreich († 1858). Both marriages remained childless.

By moving away from baroque and classicist painting, Josef Kuwasseg developed a new realistic style in depicting the Styrian landscape. His style was exemplary, although he neither taught as a teacher at the State Drawing Academy in Graz nor as a chamber painter in the service of Archduke Johann , like other artists such as Matthäus Loder or Thomas Ender were commissioned at the same time . Comprehensive drawings are created. Different tree species are easy to recognize, but Kuwasseg did not get lost in detail. Pictures, which were initially lithographed and which found general recognition, were later executed by Kuwasseg himself on an enlarged scale in watercolor. His watercolors convey a certain atmosphere through the use of light and shadow. He also painted landscapes in oil and occasionally tried his hand at wall painting. Kuwasseg also wrote art pedagogical and art theoretical writings. When it came to purchases, his graphics and watercolors found more appreciation in England than on site. The lithographs, such as the views of Styria, Graz and the Graz Castle - before and after their destruction in 1853 and 54 - often worked out together with his student and friend Carl Reichert , are still considered to be important topographical-historical, artistic , industrial history and folklore image documents. His most important student, Hermann Freiherr von Königsbrunn , also gave a good description of his teacher Josef Kuwasseg in his autobiography and reported details about his life and work.
