Josef Mánes came from an extensive family of painters. Important family members and Bohemian artists included his father Antonín Mánes , his uncle and director of the Prague Painting Academy Wenceslaus Mánes , his brother Quido Mánes and his sister Amalie Mánes .

He received his first artistic education from his father. From 1835 to 1844, Mánes studied at the Prague Academy of Fine Arts with František Tkadlík and Christian Ruben . He then continued his studies for two years in the then artist metropolis of Munich . After his return he spent two decades with Count Friedrich Silva-Tarouca at the castle in Czech . From here he also undertook his exploratory trips to Moravia , Slovakia and Poland .

Mánes took an active part in cultural life. He was an active member of the Umělecká beseda artists' association , he designed the uniforms and flags for the Sokol gymnastics movement and for numerous other literary patriotic associations. In 1857 he visited Russia and three years later Italy, from where he returned mentally ill.

meaning

Josef Mánes is considered to be the Czech national painter of the 19th century. His varied work includes landscapes, portraits, historical scenes, genre paintings, folklore and botanical studies. However, his works were not understood by his contemporaries and received coolly, which ultimately meant that Mánes was highly dependent on the Silva-Tarouca house . His illustrations of the Prague clock and his pictures, inspired by life in the village, whose people symbolized purity, originality and humanity for him, are well known.

Honors

A Czech artists' association, Spolek výtvarných umělců Mánes ( SVU Mánes ), founded in 1887 and whose exhibition building is located in Prague, was named after the artist . One of Prague's central Vltava bridges, which leads from the old town to the Lesser Town, bears his name. A statue representing Mánes can be found at the beginning of the Mánes Bridge on the Old Town side. Numerous postage stamps from the Czechoslovak Post show motifs based on pictures by Mánes or himself.
