After his active career, Obererlacher became a state-certified cross-country skiing instructor in 2001. He then looked after various biathletes and was the technical ski supervisor for the Austrian national ski team. He then worked as a trainer and technical racing service manager for the Japanese national biathlon team and technical advisor to a development team for ski wax . This was followed by an activity as a freelance base trainer in the biathlon center Obertilliach . From 2010 Obererlacher was the head coach of the Finnish national biathlon team, where he was not only responsible for looking after the national team but also for training biathlon coaches. With Kaisa Mäkäräinen , for whom he was primarily responsible as shooting trainer, a Finnish biathlete won the overall World Cup for the first time under Obererlacher's aegis. After this success and only one year, he turned his back on Finland at the end of the 2010/11 World Cup season and has been a coach in the Slovak biathlon team ever since . In the 2017/18 season Obererlacher was the head coach of the Belgian national biathlon team and, in this role, also looked after the biathletes Michael Rösch and Florent Claude, who had moved to Belgium from Germany and France . Since the financial resources for the 2018/19 season were not sufficient to “guarantee a professional environment”, Obererlacher and the Belgian association decided not to extend his contract.
