Joseph Schlotthauer
Joseph Schlotthauer (born March 14, 1789 in Munich ; † June 15, 1869 there ) was a Bavarian history painter .
Life
Joseph Schlotthauer was the youngest son of an electoral theater servant. Although his artistic skills were known, he had to learn the carpentry trade. At the same time he attended the holiday school , where he was also taught physics , chemistry and mechanics . Through his own studies, he acquired knowledge in painting, he that in January 1809 the Munich Royal Academy of Fine Arts for the subject of portraiture enrolled could. In the same year he joined the electoral army as a volunteer hunter and took part in the Tyrolean uprising . After the dissolution of his corps , he returned to the academy and in the following years mainly painted religious pictures. From 1819 he was an assistant to Peter von Cornelius , who helped him to work for the Munich Glyptothek . This enabled him to learn the technique of fresco painting . After a stay in Italy in 1830, he was appointed professor of history painting at the Munich Royal Academy in 1831. Schlotthauer developed an influential position as a teacher. His works are under the influence of the Nazarenes . Schlotthauer also worked on the magnificent painting of the interiors and the mosaic floors of the Pompejanum in Aschaffenburg.
Together with the Oberbergrat Johann Nepomuk von Fuchs , Joseph Schlotthauer invented stereochromy . In 1832 he made a lithograph replica of "The Dance of Death" by Hans Holbein the Younger , which comprised 53 sheets. In addition, he was busy at times with the construction of orthopedic aids and machines.
In 1859 he was retired and awarded the Knight's Cross of the Order of St. Michael . In 1860 he became a member of the Munich Association for Christian Art .
