Josep Planas Sotés (* 1901 in Barcelona ; † 1977 ), also known as José Planas or Pepe Planas , was a Spanish football player and coach.

Player career

Planas began his career with UE Sant Andreu in 1916. With UE Sant Andreu, who at that time still played under the name L'Avenç del Sport , Planas was champion of the Catalan second division in 1919. From 1920 to 1927 the Catalan played for FC Barcelona , with whom he won the Catalan Championship five times and the Spanish Cup three times. He played a total of 181 games for FC Barcelona, ​​including friendlies. After his stint at Barcelona, ​​he still played in France with AT Riorges , a club based in Rouen .

Due to his sometimes rustic style of defense, he was nicknamed "furia española" (Spanish fury).

Coaching career

As coach of Racing de Ferrol in the period from 1937 to 1939, he was able to reach the final of the Spanish Cup in 1939 , but in the Racing lost 6-2 to Sevilla FC . From 1940 to 1941 he coached FC Barcelona , which he led to ninth place in the league and fourth place in the Primera División the following season . With Real Valladolid (1943-1944) he rose in the 1943/44 season in the third division. In the 1946/47 season he took over the coaching position at another first division club, Espanyol Barcelona . There he narrowly escaped relegation this season.

In 1949 he was the coach of the Ecuadorian national team .

In his coaching career he also coached several Spanish second division teams, namely Real Murcia (1930–1931 and 1941–1942), Celta Vigo (1931–1932), Deportivo La Coruña (1933–1934), Real Saragossa (1935 and 1950), Granada CF. (1935–1936), Racing de Ferrol (1937–1939), and CD Tenerife (1954)

Furthermore, Planas was still active as a coach at Guayaquil, Arenas Club de Getxo , Cartagena FC and CD San ​​Andrés .
