Joseph-Dominique d'Inguimbert

Joseph-Dominique d'Inguimbert , known as Dom Malachie , (born August 27, 1683 in Carpentras ; † September 6, 1757 ibid) was prelate and librarian , bishop of the diocese of Carpentras from 1735 to 1757 and rector of Comtat Venaissin in 1745 .

His parents were Esprit-Joseph d'Inguimbert and Anne de la Plane. He attended the Jesuit- led Collège de Garçons and the school of the Dominican monastery in Carpentras. In 1698 he completed theological and philosophical studies in Aix-en-Provence and with the support of the Simiane family from 1702 in Paris , where he was ordained priest in 1707. In 1709 he stayed in Rome, and from there he retired the following year to the Trappist monastery of Buonsollazzo in Tuscany.

In 1713 Joseph-Dominique d'Inguimbert was appointed to the professorship of theology at the University of Pisa , but a year later he returned to Buonsollazzo, where he took his vows in 1715 and took the religious name Dom Malachie . In the following years he lived in the Cistercian monastery Casamari in Lazio . There he was mainly active as a writer of theological writings.

On behalf of members of the Albani family, he wrote the biography of Pope Clement XI. Cardinal Lorenzo Corsini made him his secretary and librarian. In 1730 the cardinals elected Lorenzo Corsini pope, who named Clement XII. assumed. The Pope appointed Joseph-Dominique d'Inguimbert Bishop of Carpentras in 1735. As such, he made 80 pastoral visits in his diocese, and in 1756 convened a diocesan synod. In 1745 he also served as rector of the papal territory Comtat Venaissin at Carpentras.

The bishop had a large new hospital building built in Carpentras, the Hôtel-Dieu de Carpentras .

With his will, Joseph-Dominique d'Inguimbert bequeathed his library, his collection of medals and his collection of antiques and graphics to the city of Carpentras, which became a rich cultural institution whose holdings are still owned by the city today. Today they form the Bibliothèque Inguimbertine and the basis of the Musée Comtadin-Duplessis in Carpentras.

In the Hôtel-Dieu there is a funerary monument for the bishop made by the sculptor Étienne Dantoine .
