Joseph Anna Guillaume Tans

Joseph Anna Guillaume Tans (born November 22, 1914 in Maastricht , † November 20, 1992 in Groningen ) was a Dutch Romance studies and French studies .

life and work

Tans studied at Radboud University Nijmegen (formerly Katholieke Universiteit Nijmegen) and was a French teacher in 's-Hertogenbosch , later in Utrecht . He received his doctorate from the University of Nijmegen in 1949 with the thesis Bossuet en Hollande (Maastricht 1949). A two-year scholarship enabled him to do further research in Paris, Rome and Leuven.

He was lecturer at the University of Groningen from 1959 and from 1961 until his retirement in 1979 professor for New French language and literature (also dean of his faculty).

Under the influence of his teacher Gerard Brom (1882-1959), Tans made Jansenism the research topic of his life. At the side of Marinus Kok , he was involved in the Rome-Utrecht Discussion Commission, which, following the Second Vatican Council from 1966 to 1981, discussed the relationship between the Catholic Church and the Old Catholic Church of the Netherlands (which is strong in Utrecht) .
