Joseph Anton Carl

Joseph Anton Carl (born August 3, 1725 in Edenhof , today the city of Penzberg , † March 22, 1799 in Ingolstadt ) was a German scientist and physician.

After a kind of basic course in philosophy, natural science and theology at Weihenstephan Monastery ( Freising ), Carl moved to the University of Ingolstadt , where he studied medicine. In 1749 he successfully completed this course with a dissertation .

Following this, Carl went on his cavalier tour to France; with longer stays in Strasbourg and Paris . In the summer of 1753 he returned to Bavaria and in the following year accepted a position at the University of Ingolstadt.

There he taught chemistry and pharmacology, and later also physics. From his occupation with the medical garden of the university later resulted in his lectures in botany.

In 1759, Carl became one of the first members of the Elector Maximilian III. Joseph founded the Kurbayerische Akademie in 1759 . In 1763 he was admitted to the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina .
