Joseph Barrell
Joseph Barrell (born December 15, 1869 in New Providence , New Jersey , † May 4, 1919 in New Haven , Connecticut ) was an American geologist and engineer at Yale University .
Life
Joseph Barrell studied from 1888 at Lehigh University , where he earned a bachelor's degree in 1892 . In 1893 he graduated as an engineer (EM), in 1897 a master’s degree . He then worked at Lehigh University as a lecturer in mining and metallurgy . Barrell and 1901 worked for the United States Geological Survey in Montana and received simultaneously at the Yale University a Ph.D. in geology. First he received a professorship at Lehigh University, but returned in 1903 as an assistant professor at Yale University, where in 1908 a chair in structural geology was established for him .
In 1905 Barrell was elected as a fellow in the American Association for the Advancement of Science , in 1915 as a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences , and in 1916 he received an honorary doctorate from Lehigh University. In 1919 - a few days before his death - he was elected to the National Academy of Sciences .
Barrell died of pneumonia and meningitis after a brief period of serious illness . He had been married to Lena Hopper Bailey since 1902 and the couple had four sons.
Act
Barrell is best known for his work on the formation of sedimentary rock , especially his hypothesis that not only marine deposits can form sedimentary rock, but also deposits from rivers, wind or ice ( glaciers ). Other works by Barrell dealt with the formation of batholiths or with the isostasis of the earth's crust and its hypothetical structure from several layers.
William H. Twenhofel was one of his students.
