The nature and landscape protection area Rheinniederung between Au am Rhein, Durmersheim and Rheinstetten lies in the area of ​​the city of Rheinstetten in the district of Karlsruhe and in the area of ​​the communities Au am Rhein and Durmersheim in the district of Rastatt in Baden-Württemberg . It has been designated as a nature reserve since July 15, 1994 with a size of 261.6 hectares under the identification number 2.181.

The area extends east of the Rhine north of Würmersheim , a district of the municipality of Durmersheim. To the west is Au am Rhein and to the northeast is Mörsch , a district of Rheinstetten. East extends the B 36 , north, the country road L 566 and L the west 78a.

Protection purpose

The purpose of protection is the preservation, safeguarding and development of the Federbach as a brook floodplain typical of the Rhine lowlands on an old loop of the Rhine with reeds and large sedge stocks as well as willow bushes, alders and other plants in humid locations as well as an element that defines and structures the landscape in the Rhine plain.

In addition, the large number of plant communities in their typical, near-natural to natural manifestations with all variants from wet and humid to dry locations with all the relict occurrences of formerly extensive pipe grass meadow communities and sandy grass communities on extremely dry locations should be secured.

The occurrence of regionally important bird species as well as other animal species, especially insect species, which are bound to the diverse habitat structures and the occurrence of almost all amphibian species native to Baden-Württemberg with one of the largest tree frog populations in the state, should also be preserved and secured.
